$35,000 and Threats to Publish Photos: Details of a Witchcraft Case in Amman

The Amman Magistrate Court has issued a ruling in a fraud and witchcraft case conducted through Snapchat, following a complaint filed by a woman against another woman whom she accused of impersonating a “sheikha” and claiming that she could resolve her marital disputes. The accused later asked her for personal and family photos and for money transfers, before threatening to publish the photos and harm members of her family.

According to the ruling, the complainant transferred a total of approximately $35,000 to the defendant. The prosecution charged her with threats, electronic fraud, and alleged communication with spirits and witchcraft.

After the complainant dropped her personal claim, the court dismissed the public prosecution charges of threats and fraud. However, it convicted her of the offense of communicating with spirits and witchcraft, sentencing her to a fine of JD 10 plus court fees.
